If you are planning to go sportfishing or other boating activities while staying on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii it is very possible that you may leave out of Honokohou Harbor. If you are traveling from the Waikoloa Beach Resort area you will head south and it is a few miles past the Kona airport.
Honokohau Harbor is a full service harbor and features a fuel facility, repair facility, convenience store, boat rentals, various size ramps, 2 comfort stations, restrooms, the Harbor House Restaurant, and much more.
The Harbor House Restaurant is a popular stop after a day on the water. Here you can find a selection of local foods and fresh fish along with a full service bar. Most of the seating within the restaurant offer nice water views within the harbor.
There are over 20 options of sportfishing charters that leave from Honokohou Harbor. Some are private charters and some are shared charters. They also offer various times throughout the day, but the best time seams to be in the early morning. If you are specifically interested in trying to real in a big catch, we recommend Bite Me Sportfishing. If you want something that is a little more flexible and maybe includes fishing, but also maybe snorkeling we recommend Fire Hatt Sportfishing. A lot of the more popular companies book far in advance so it is best to reserve a date and time as soon as possible.
There is a fair amount of sea life just outside the harbor so it is not uncommon to take a snorkel tour and one of the first stops being just outside the harbor. It is also not uncommon to spot a pod of spinner dolphins just outside the harbor.
The Honokohou Harbor also offers a variety of companies for sunset sails, whale watching, snorkeling, and scuba diving. There are other options for these near the resort areas so people typically do not take these out of the harbor if they are staying in the resorts. The companies in the harbor are very convenient for people staying in Kona.
Guests staying with Waikoloa Vacation Rentals can call the concierge for assistance in booking their ocean excursion out of Honokohou Harbor.
