While Hawaii offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. They are very different from the beaches you may experience in other states such as Florida. Beach safety is something that is commonly taught in Hawaii and is important to know when traveling to Hawaii.
How sandy are the beaches?
Most of the sand at beaches in Hawaii is imported in. Due to this the thickness of the sand at any given beach is based on a number of factors. First, the sand erodes over time due to storms, tides, and things of that nature. Second, due to the erosion the sand does need to be replenished so the frequency of replenishing will determine how much sand is there.
Sand is important at beaches in Hawaii because what lies below the sand is lava rocks, which are very sharp. When the sand is replenished this will not be an issue, but it is good to be aware of the sand quantity at any given beach you go to.
Reefs
Reefs are what give Hawaii some of the best beaches. You can swim out just off the beach and see an array of sea life including turtles, colorful tropical fish, and beautiful coral amongst other things. While this is all great reefs do offer some safety issues. First, the reefs are sharp so if you touch them with your hands or your feel you are likely to get cut. Second, there are typically sea urchins near the reefs and if you step or touch those they will penetrate your skin.
Currents
There are areas of the island that offer some amazing waves and views. With these areas also comes currents. The danger of these currents is you can easily be moved from an area of safety with sand to an area that is rocky with no sand and while the water may not be deep there is not a place you can safely walk or touch ground.
In closing, Hawaii does have some of the nicest beaches in the world and they are a great place to enjoy your vacation. It is just important to be educated in cautious while at the beach just like anywhere else.
