Puako offers some of the most unique properties on the Big Island of Hawaii. Puako is located on the famous Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii nestled amongst the resorts, but yet is not a resort. It is located between the Mauna Lani Resort and the Hapuna Beach hotel. Puako is home to some of the most amazing snorkeling and scuba diving.
Puako Beach Drive is the main road that runs through Puako and is roughly 2.5 miles in length and offers a wide range of properties. Properties on the oceanside of the road offer spectacular oceanfront locations. Properties on the mountain side of the road can offer some ocean views if they are two stories, but even without a view they offer easy ocean access. Puako Beach Condos are the only condo complex in Puako. It is located on the mountain side of the road roughly ½ mile in. It is four stories high and only offers a handful of properties. Many of the properties on the upper floors offer ocean views.
Within the private homes of Puako you will find a large variety of homes. Some of the homes are older, smaller Hawaiian homes that have been passed down from generation to generation. On the other end of the spectrum are large, spectacular resort style homes. As you enter Puako, on the right are some lots that recently sold. These homes that have been built and are being built are some of the more spectacular oceanfront homes on the Big Island of Hawaii. These home are nestled on a small bay within Puako.
One of the most unique aspects of some of the homes at Puako that for the most part is unique to Puako is that there are many homes that you can walk just off your backyard and be on white sand. While the waters at Puako are not great for playing in the water, they are great for snorkeling. Not a day goes by that you will not see a boat off the coast of Puako with snorkelers or scuba divers. In the winter months homes on the oceanside get spectacular views of whales in the distance. One of the most unique aspects of Puako is that while it is all one small community, it offers a variety of zoning. While this used to mean nothing, with the recent Hawaii short term vacation rental laws it became very applicable. For the most part the entry of Puako is zone resort, which means that those homes can be vacation rentals. The rest of Puako is zoned residential, which mean if those homes are vacation rentals it is because they were rentals prior to the law going into effect and they have a non-conforming use permit.
