Pebble Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii

Pebble Beach is a black sand beach at the end of Kona Paradise in south Kona. While black sand beaches are unique, I recommend other beaches such as Punalu’u Black Sand Beach for several reasons, which we will get to.

Pebble Beach is located at the bottom of one of the steepest public roads on the Big Island. If you aren’t familiar with it, it can make you feel a bit uncomfortable and you wind through housing on a steep road. At the bottom you will find the beach and some housing that fronts it, which offer a spectacular location other than the drive to and from the homes.

Once you get to the beach, which it is considered a black sand beach, it is made up mostly of rocks and pebbles. There is not really any shade so if you plan to stay at the beach, it is highly recommended to pack an umbrella. Due to the pebbles and rocks, you will also need some form of footwear. Given the waters and the seclusion of the beach, it is not really recommended as a place to swim. At times the waves can be rough and there can be a relatively strong current in the middle of the cove.

If you like to hike, there is another beach that is similar a short hike north. It does not offer anything significantly different from Pebble Beach, but if you like to hike its a nice little hike.

There is parking near the beach, but it does not have restrooms or other amenities. It is highly recommended to bring plenty of fluids as well as sunscreen.
