If you are looking for a beach to check out in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, Magic Sands is the best bet. Formally know as White Sands, Magic Sands received it new name due to the tendency of the sand to disappear during high surf and then for the ocean waters to gradually return it after the surf ceases.
This beach is nestled on the popular Ali’i Drive. Due to this if you choose to spend a day at this beach you can easily walk to nearby restaurants, shopping, and more. Magics Beach Grill is located next to the beach and offers a nice place to have lunch or pupus and cocktails at lunch. There are also nearby vacation rentals that offer easy access to the beach.

Like many beaches in Hawaii, Magic Sand Beach offers a variety of activities. It offers plenty of sand for the children to spend a day in the sand building sand castles. It offers nice reefs along the edges, which make for great snorkeling. Depending on the time of year, there can even be some great surf for boogie boarding and surfing. While the surf can look enticing, if the surf is up it is highly recommended to only swim out if you are a very good swimmer as there can often times be strong currents.

Given that Magic Sands is one of the most popular beaches in the area, it is highly recommended to shower up early and get a good spot. While there are some areas that offer shade, it is always smart to bring a beach umbrella or something to provide additional shade. While it is well known for ocean activities and for children playing, there are quieter areas for those looking to read a book or just relax.
Magic Sands Beach Park has outdoor showers, restrooms, picnic tables, sand volleyball, and a lifeguard tower. While there is some parking across the street as well as nearby Magic Sands, it often times fills up and if you do not arrive early enough you may have to park further away along Ali’i Drive.
