2025 Big Island of Hawaii Volcanic Activity

The Big Island of Hawaii boasts something that not many other places in the world have, an active volcano. While the volcano is labeled active, it is not often that you can visit the island and see actual activity. In 2025, the volcano has been very active and has offered some spectacular sites.

What is unique this time is that most of the eruptions is visibly happening at Volcanoes National Park. In the past most of the eruption has happened on the coast of the island flowing into the ocean so if you wanted to view it, it would be a relatively long hike.

The first eruption started on December 23, 2024 and there have been 13 subsequent eruptions through the middle of of March. As always, no one knows when the last one will be, but to this point it has been consistent enough that if you are visiting within the next 2-4 weeks you are assured to see volcanic activity if you wish.

As always, go with caution as the volcano can erupt unexpectedly, the wind can shift the volcanic air, and more. If you suffer from any breathing conditions, we would not recommend going as the air quality can be very poor.

In the event you do not want to spend the day driving to and from Volcanoes National Park and hiking around, a helicopter tour is a great way to view the activity. Most helicopter tour companies sell out when the volcano is active so we highly recommend booking in advance if you want to view it by a helicopter tour.
